Artwork Inspiration
"Openness - How Are You?" celebrates the power of a simple phrase shared across cultures. Featuring the phrase "How are you?" in English, Mandarin, Malay, Tamil, and sign language, the artwork reflects the diversity and warmth of everyday connections in Singapore. It reminds us that caring for one another often begins with just a few words - spoken with openness, across languages and hearts.
Artist Profiles (Group Bio)
A diverse group of artists from different races, ages, and abilities, Tay Bee Lian, Azmi Bin Mahmad, Shalene Rajasegran, and Lee Siang Cheit (Joe) handwrite their own languages and dialects of “How are you,” reflecting the familiar greetings shared between family, friends, and neighbours across Singapore. Among them, one is non-verbal, another communicates through sign language, while the others primarily use their mother tongue, and through the process of creating this piece together, they embraced these differences, showing how collaboration and creativity can bridge language and cultural barriers while capturing the warmth, intimacy, and homely connection of everyday interactions, transforming simple words into a shared celebration of community and cultural diversity.
